Discussion: Music... with random free tracks!
... because I miss posting, and I think it might be an interesting thing to get other people's thoughts on...

Last night Liam and I were talking about music, and came to a bit of a disagreement.

As far as music is concerned, I'm not fussy at all really. I'm not a music "buff" like a lot of my friends, who are into generally one type of music and are really REALLY into it and think everything else is shit. Although I do have genres/artists that I prefer, I'll listen to pretty much anything. The only thing I kind of draw the line at DJ Dickheads who speed up a classic song and then shit all over it with swearing and stuff.

I'm not one of those people who have to have music on all the time, I generally just put it on when I can't get a song out of my head or a feel like a bit of a sing-song or a dance. So, (and it might sound really bad - at least it did to Liam who thinks my attitude is 100% wrong) I don't really care if artists write their own songs/play their own instruments, or even if they can sing very well... as long as it sounds decent enough when I listen to it. Of course I respect artists that can do their own stuff in that way, but it doesn't mean that I'll necessarily like their music any better than someone who can't.

Liam was trying to come up with a definition of music, but he couldn't. I tried to tell him what MY definition of music was, and when we tried to look it up on Wikipedia there where several definitions that said what I was trying to say a lot better. For example:

Post-modern and other theories argue that, like all art, music is defined primarily by social context. According to this view, music is what people call music, whether it is a period of silence, found sounds, or performance.

Many definitions of music implicitly hold that music is a communicative activity which conveys to the listener moods, emotions, thoughts, impressions, or philosophical, sexual, or political concepts or positions.

I listen to music because of how it makes me feel. I generally enjoy songs more if I can relate to the lyrics, if it reminds me of a friend, or something that has happened in my own life, or if it makes me laugh. I like music that makes me feel something.

That's really as deep as I go when it comes to music.

So, what about you? How do you all view music? I have a feeling most of you are going to side with Liam on this.
